Sweet dreams

Mummy is very happy since the past few days. I heard her talk to Daddy about me sleeping through the night.

I think I know why. Maybe I drink lots of milk before I go to bed at night. I am drinking 160ml now. Almost catching up with my sister. She is doing 180 only. Here I come, Sis!

Maybe I have been seeing funny things when I sleep. I do not know how to describe them here. Very colourful. Bright. Cheery. Lots of toys. I think you call it "dream". Maybe that is why I am beginning to sleep through.

Yawn... time to drink milk and go to sleep again. :D

Piak, piak!

"No bite bite, Shannon!", warned my sister.

Oh, come on, my dear sister. I just want to know what it tastes like.

"Don't put your finger in your mouth. So dirty." She got a little bit more annoyed over my actions.

Just one more time, please.

*piak, piak* No further warning was given.

I cried, not because it was painful but why beat me? Mummy...

Daddy's blogging, too

My daddy finally has a blog of his own. I think he is jealous that I am getting all the attention these days. That is why he decided that he needs to draw his own territory. Haha! Nice try, Daddy.

Wei wei... can u hear me?

Mummy carried me and held me in a sitting position in front of her laptop. She was wearing a weird looking accessory on her head, with her ears covered and a little lollipop sticking out towards her mouth. She was talking to the computer, laughing along the way.

"Say hello to Daddy. Wave, Shannon", instructed Mummy.

I did not know what was going on but I obliged. Even managed to put up a cute little smile when my sister came and rubbed my face.

"Can you see her smile, Daddy?", Mummy asked the laptop.

Then, she held my tiny little hands and waved them again and again. Whatever she was doing, it surely made her happy.

But after a couple of minutes, I had to go. Something unsightly was coming out from my nappy. Oops!

Until then Mr Laptop, talk to you some other time.

Changi Airport

Daddy packed a big red suitcase. The funny thing is that only he packed and not Mummy, sister or me. Where is he going this time? We all went to airport today. This is the first time I have been to an airport. It is very big. Why do they have to build it so big? The people are all very small only.

Finally, we get to take our family photo.

I wanna go Japan

Mummy, Daddy and my sister Rachel had lots of fun in Japan. They started their trip from Osaka and went straight to Universal Studios upon arrival. Spent a whole day on the rides (or rather, queuing for rides).

The next day, they took a Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto to visit Kiyomizu temple. Each one of them took a big gulp of holy mountain water to bless them with good health and fortune. In the evening, they proceeded to view the magnificent pillar-shaped rock formations at Tojimbo. Think of 12 Apostles at Great Ocean Road near Melbourne, Australia. The day ended with a sumptious Japanese dinner at Onsen resort in Awara.

When in Japan, you can never tell your children not to eat sweets. They have thousand of varieties of sweets. After breakfast, they visited Kagahan, where they could sample many types of yummy desserts. Knowing that too much sugar makes people hyper-active, they moved on to a Japanese garden, Kenrokuen in Kanazawa City. It was time to stroll around and relax (and burn off the sugar). Imagine having tofu (beancurd) topped with real gold flakes for lunch. Wow! Looks expensive. But that really came at a price because everyone came out half-full. :p

After being treated like royalty, it was time to see how people live in remote areas at Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World heritage site. The people there built their houses using straw (grass). Amazing handwork. A trip to Japan is not complete without trying their beef. Although not as popular as Kobe beef, Hida beef really melted in the mouth. Delicious!

It was a cold and windy morning. A stroll to the morning market was refreshing. Mummy bought lots of goodies home, including rice that was freshly harvested. And she got lots of Sarubobo good luck charms for family and friends. Ramen, ramen, ramen! A trip to a ramen house gave them a chance to see how ramen was manufactured. Of course, everyone got to sample the simple but yummy ramen. After lunch, they proceeded to Daioh Wasabi Farm and tried wasabi-flavoured ice-cream. A fresh wasabi root about the length of an adult's palm costs about Yen2,500 (about SGD30). Before dinner, they visited Fuji Grape vineyard, where they got a chance to pick and cut the juiciest bunch of grapes. Slurp!

Finally, the day my sister was eagerly waiting for arrived. It was time to go to Tokyo Disneyland. But the sky had other ideas. It started to drizzle when the bus departed from the hotel. Everything looked gloomy. Even my sister, Rachel, got moody. They reached there late at about 11am. The place was crowded although it was a weekday, probably because it coincided with Halloween month. Mummy was terribly disappointed when they reached Pooh's Hunny ride. The waiting time for the normal queue was more than 2 hours and the FastPass, where you can come back later, was for 9.30pm. Shattered! They skipped and went on to Toontown, where they spent most of the time. The sky started to pour late in the afternoon while Mummy and my sister were queuing up for Dumbo. Rain or shine, a mini parade went on, although shorter than usual. That was the consolation for the day.

For a safe trip home, they started the last day praying at one of the oldest temples in Japan, Asakusa Kannon. It was more than 1300 years old. Then it was souvenir shopping time at Nakamise Avenue leading to the temple. The last stop was at Odaiba Park, where they visited Toyota Mega Web, a huge showroom of Toyota vehicles, including the latest driverless car. Mummy, Daddy and my sister departed from Narita airport in Tokyo and reached home late past midnight.

I am going to drink more milk, grow up faster. Then, I can join my family for the next tour. Where next? I don't know.

Mushi-mushi

That big grin on her face. I love that. Her eyes look a bit wet. Is she crying? I don't know. Maybe she is too happy to see me again after so...ooooo long. I am also overjoyed to see Mummy. Carry me, carry me! :D

Where are you?

Where is that familiar face? The ever smiley face?

The person who hugs and carry me everyday with tender loving care...
who tickles me to make me laugh...
who keeps me warm...
who nurses me...
who runs to me when I cry...
who asks me not to lick my tiny fingers...
who bathes me with warmth (not just warm water)...
who sings my name with joy...
who misses me everytime she doesn't see me...
who tells the world I'm her world...

Mummy, I miss you. Come home soon, ok.

Love Me, Love My Sister

As I grow up, some people say that I look more like my sister. Others say I do not. That is why my Daddy decided to put us together in one photo and let you decide for yourself. What do you think?

My First Smile... Captured!

See what my Daddy did today on my 2nd month. He kept pointing his camera at me and made funny sounds and actions. I can't help laughing. :D

Sunshine Doctor

My sister went to see Sunshine Doctor today. You do not know who is that? That is her dentist. Mummy said I have to stay at home because I do not have any tooth yet. So sad, I thought I can follow them. Looks like my sister had all the fun. She got to wear those cute looking glasses.

Like a giraffe

Drink milk milk, sleep, wake up, drink milk milk again. That is what I do everyday and every night. I love this very much.

Mummy brought me for checkup. A nurse weighed and measured me. I have grown taller by 5cm and weigh 4.17kg now. In just 1 month.

"Unbelievable!", exclaimed Mummy. "Is this possible? That she can grow taller by 5cm so quickly? Could the nurse measured wrongly at delivery?", Mummy quizzed the nurse.

"Some babies grow very fast", explained the nurse.

"Hmm...", my Mummy doubted the reply.

What do you think? Is it possible? But anyway, I love Mummy's milk milk. Yummy! I am hungry again. Waa-waa...

Full Month

Lots of people today. Mummy said it is my "Full Month". I am 1 month old now, almost. Mummy invited her friends and relatives to our home. Very noisy. A lot of people came over to me, stared at me and smiled. Wonder if they know I am a girl if they did not know my name. That hair cut sure did not help. Could I have not got botak, Mummy?

Someone is missing today. Someone important in my life. My Daddy. He is far far away now at Sri Lanka. Sob, sob! How I wish Daddy is home with us now. I miss you, Daddy. Mummy and sis, too. Come home soon, ok?

Botak Head (updated with video)

Botak head,
Go to school.
Teacher asked,
Why you late?
Because my mother cut my botak head.

(* Botak = bald in Malay)

Song passed down from Grandma to Daddy. Now, to me!

Why do they have to make me bald? Mummy says I look like a boy now. Waa-waa!

My Grandma & Grandpa

I was sound asleep when I heard lots of noise outside my room. It was not just my sister's voice, neither was it just my cousins, Brandon and Bronson. Sounds like many more people. Very unfamiliar voices.

"She has a higher nose", said a lady's voice. "Looks a bit like Daddy", she continued. "Ah, she is waking up".

I opened my little eyes and found a lady with curly hair curiously staring at me.

"Hello, I'm Grandma!", sang the lady.

Wow! Grandma and Grandpa are here together with Uncle, Aunt and my cousins from across the land, Nicholas, Ivan and Megan. :D

Gift of Gold

(Warning! Not for the weak-hearted)

What is the difference between formula milk and breast milk? Some of you already know that breast milk has all essential goodies that my little body needs to grow up strong and healthy. It is not too hot and not too cold. I can drink as much or as little as I want, whenever, wherever.

But there is something more to it. As a thank you to my Mummy for her milk, here is my little gift of gold.

A breastfed baby's poo-poo is yellowish as compared to dark brown for a formula-fed baby. See, it looks very nice and clean. That's one of the good things about breast milk. Easy to digest, easy to clean. :p

Who Do I Look Like?

"Not enough photos", I heard my fans complaining. So, here you go.

Is everyone ok?

Just less than 1 week after I got home from the hospital, Mummy and Daddy brought me back there again.

"Hey, that's the Uncle that pulled me out from Mummy's tummy!", I thought when I saw Dr Lee. Look at his big grin. He must be very happy to see me again. He checked Mummy and was happy that she is recovering well.

Before it was my turn, I started crying. "I'm hungry, Mummy".

Mummy sat with me at a corner of the clinic and nursed me. While she was nursing me, my baby doctor, Dr Watt, came out of her room. She was very nice and asked if my Mummy wants to go into her room for the consultation. Since I was still enjoying myself, Dr Watt decided to chat with Mummy in the waiting area.

"She's doing fine", explained Dr Watt to Mummy. "She has slight signs of jaundice from the blood test but it is below the level where she needs to be admitted. So, there is nothing to worry about."

"Yippee! No need to stay in hospital". And we went home after that. So, I thought...

Sneak Preview

Hello, I am Shannon.

Orange Juice

"Wai Poh, why are you giving Mei Mei drink orange juice?", asked my sister, Rachel.

"Bu shi la (No-lah)", chuckled my Wai Poh (Grandma). "Shi ni de Mummy de milk milk lai de (It's your Mummy's milk)", she continued.

"Ah?!", exclaimed sis. Then, she laughed.

She ain't heavy, she's my sister

Back home, I was greeted with wide arms by my sister, Rachel. She could not wait to carry me. I love you, sis.

Going Home

Mummy looks well and can take care of herself. Her doctor came and popped her a quick question, "Do you want to go home today?". Without hesitation, Mummy nodded.

"Hooray, we can go home", I thought.

"But we have to get your baby's blood and hearing test results first", explained the doctor. He turned to the nurse, who said the results should be out by 11am.

Next, came my doctor. An energetic lady who speaks faster than the bullet train. She told my Mummy that they need to ensure that I do not have jaundice, which would make me look yellow. Then, she went on to explain about some things to do with old blood breaking down, not enough water, replacing breast milk with formula milk, exposing me to morning sun and so on.

After the doctors left, Mummy and Daddy went to register my birth. I am officially a Singapore citizen now. I just missed National Day Parade by 2 days. Aww, I heard the fireworks were marvellous.

Daddy packed our bags and settled the hospital bill. I got flying colours for my blood test results and cleared to go.

The nurses at Mount A took very good care of me and my Mummy. They always carry a warm smile when they are doing their rounds. Thank you very much.

Size her up

While the doctor finished his work on my Mummy, Daddy followed me and the mid-wife to the nursery. Daddy was beaming like a little boy who just got his Playstation 3. It was time to check out the specs.

Head circumference: 34cm

Height: 47cm

Weight: 3.23kg

Push, Push!

"Just started", explained the doctor.

Daddy got seated beside Mummy and placed a hand on her shoulders to assure her that everything would be fine. Mummy had difficulty breathing. A nurse placed an oxygen mask to her face. Much better.

The doctor told Daddy, "Head is quite big". He swiftly took a forcep and ordered his nurses to get ready. "1-2-3, push...", he commanded. That instruction was for the nurses, as they assisted to push me out from my Mummy's womb. In just a few seconds, I was delivered into this world.

"Wa-wa-wa", I cried. The doctor than carried me to my Mummy. I could see her warm smiling face, full of pride and joy at seeing me.

The mid-wife told Daddy, "Get your camera ready". They started cleaning me up as my Daddy snapped away.

What's up, doc?

Daddy got all the registration done. Mummy was pushed into the operating theatre. This time, Daddy got to join Mummy in the room. She opted for Caesarean with epidural. The kind of stuff that keeps you awake but painless. Scary.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Daddy changed into some greenish gown. Looked more like pajamas. Mummy was already in the room. A nurse came out and checked Daddy's tag. It was confirmed. He is my Daddy. "Please wait a while", said the nurse.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. 7.30am. Another nurse walked past and told Daddy, "Your doctor should be here soon. He is always on time." Daddy smiled.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Another 40 minutes passed. The cold steel door of the lift opened. A bright smiling face walked out hurriedly. He caught Daddy's eyes.

"Wasn't it suppose to be Sunday?", quizzed the doctor. "No. It was changed from Monday to today", claimed Daddy. "Ah, I was actually doing my rounds here this morning. When I got home, a nurse called me and I rushed back here. Anyway...", chuckled the doctor.

The doctor whisked into the changing room.

The journey

Mummy's bag. Checked. Baby's clothes. Checked. Cordlife box. Checked. Important documents. Checked. We were all ready to leave home. No hurry. It was still early. Very early indeed. Only 5am.

Which is the shortest way to Mount A? SLE/Upper Thomson or BKE/PIE? We tried the former a few weeks back. Lots of traffic lights but not heavy on traffic. Daddy chose the latter today because it was still early. Most people are still dreaming anyway.

An Early Day

Clik-clak, clik-clak.. Past midnight. Mummy was still working hard on her assignments before she goes on her 3-month maternity leave. She just got to get it out of the way because it is her responsibility. And, if not, someone may bug her when she is suppose to be resting and spending time with me.

Daddy kept her company. Sort of. He did not go to bed at his usual time, which was normally about 10+pm. The tv was on, with Lord of the Wars playing from a rented disc. He wondered what the movie was about. More of Nicolas Cage mumbling than anything. Anyway, it probably did not caught my Daddy's attention as his mind was on the events about to happen in the morning.

Enter.. Clik.. The final email was sent out. Great. Now, everyone can get some sleep, including me. Not that the sleep will make much difference anyway. But 2+ hours should be a good nap.
